WATERFORD DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL: The Town of Waterford’s Dragon Boat Festival is returning to Waterford Harbor on Saturday, August 5 at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. The Dragon Boat Festival is a fun day for the family, full of dragon boat racing, friendly competition, and awards. During the festival, teams of paddlers will race one another in a tournament style competition. Each team has a practice session with a professional coach. No experience is necessary, anyone may register. Two sponsorship levels are available. Races will begin at 10 a.m. on August 5th, with an anticipated end time of 3:30 p.m. Team check-in will open at 8 a.m. Paddlers should also be available on August 4th for a practice session. NARCAN TRAINING: A free Narcan training session and distribution event. Noon-3pm at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Clifton Park, 2001 US-9, Round Lake. Learn how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and administer Narcan, the brand name for Naloxone, which can save a life. Participants will receive a free Narcan rescue kit, which includes two doses of Narcan, a rescue breathing face shield, a certificate of training, a drug disposal system, and a mental health and substance use disorder resource guide. Residents who are unable to attend the distribution can register to obtain an overdose rescue kit at www.saratogacountyny.gov/narcan.

COAST GUARD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: On board the USS Slater, at 10am. Join the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in celebrating the U.S. Coast Guard’s 233rd birthday, August 5th at 10 AM aboard USS SLATER. The Coast Guard’s actual birthday is the 4th, so on both the 4th and 5th, all Coast Guard Veterans can tour USS SLATER with no admission fee.

STEPHENTOWN NEW RESIDENT RECEPTION: Are you new to Stephentown? We would like to welcome you to town! Have you lived in Stephentown for a while, or forever? HISTORICAL PRESENTATION: “From the Record,” a talk and demonstration by collector Wally Stock. Sunday, August 5, at 2:00 p.m. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown. Learn about early recording history. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. The Strengthening Families Program is a three-week interactive series of workshops that allow parents/caregivers to spend special time with their youth and help them be successful. During each session, parents/caregivers and their youth will learn ways to build on existing strengths, improve communications skills, and have fun together as a family. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. HERMAN MELVILLE’S BIRTHDAY: The Lansingburgh Historical Society, will be celebrating Herman Melville’s 205th Birthday on August 12 at the Herman Melville House located at 2 114th St., Troy. Richard Matorro will be the guest speaker. The talk is titled “Herman Melville: “When in Doubt, Speculate”. He will also read from his book about Melville meeting Hawthorne while hiking up Monument Mountain. Mr. Matarro will begin his talk at 10:30 am. The House, including the room Herman penned “Omoo” and “Typee”, will be open for tours from noon to 2 pm. Birthday cupcakes will be served following the talk. A $10 donation is always appreciated.

CARDBOARD BOAT RACES: Hudson Crossing Park’s 17th Annual Cardboard Boat Races are at Fort Hardy Park on Route 29 in Schuylerville, from 8am to 3pm. Admission is free for spectators. On-site registration and cardboard boat construction are open from 8 to 11 am, and the first race launches at 1pm. Rules, registration forms and hints to get started with boat building are available at www.hudsoncrossingpark.org. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Champlain Canal, participants are invited to design boats with this year’s theme in mind: Magical History Tour! Racers may construct their boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event where materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee.There will awards after each race: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for speed, the Titanic Award, Most Enthusiastic Crew, Judges Bribe Award (“Bribes” are considered donations to Hudson Crossing Park), People’s Choice, Overall Best in Show, and Most Sailors Left Afloat! Enjoy the festivities with food, live music by the Zucchini Brothers, and lots of cardboard construction! Environmental education activities, canal trivia, and terrific photo opportunities will round out a fun-filled day for all. Individuals, families, groups, businesses, and school teams are all encouraged to race. In case of inclement weather or unsafe sailing conditions this event will not be held.

LEARN TO CROCHET: Are you interested in learning how to crochet but don’t know where to start? Have you picked up the craft in the past but never finished a project? If so, this is the perfect class for you. In this four-part workshop series, master crocheter Sonya Ward will teach participants the basics of crochet and help them make “Elizabeth Stitch Fingerless Gloves” as a final project. If you struggle sewing on lost buttons or mending rips in your clothes, this workshop will give you all the instruction you need to maintain your wardrobe. SNEAKERFEST FUNDRAISER: The Saratoga Winery and the Saratoga County Children’s Committee (SCCC) are holding a fundraising event called Sneakerfest to benefit the SCCC’s back to school program. Sneakerfest will take place from 1-3pm at the Saratoga Winery, located at 462 Rte. 29, in Saratoga Springs. The organizations will collaborate with local businesses iRun LOCAL and Allo Saratoga to provide sneakers for children as they prepare to return to school in September. Sneakerfest will include free activities for kids provided by Allo Saratoga, child-friendly food concession stands, and outdoor space for yard games. Participants will have an opportunity to make donations to help outfit children with high quality sneakers, supported by iRun LOCAL.

Troy Night Out is an extended evening highlighting shops, restaurants, arts and culture that takes place on the last Friday of every month in downtown Troy. LEARN TO PAINT WITH WATERCOLOR: Join the library for a series of watercolor workshops where participants will work on seasonal landscapes under the direction of local artist Emma Rinaldi. We will be starting with a flower field, moving on to a sunny mountainscape, and finishing with an ocean view. Whether you are familiar with watercolor or have never used the medium before, all are welcome to attend. Materials will be provided. Participants can come to as many or few workshops as they choose (registration for each class is separate). The first workshop will be held on June 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, the second workshop will be held on July 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lansingburgh Branch, and the third workshop will be held on August 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library. These in-person events are free and open to the public. Registration is required (registration for each event is separate).
